Mapping corporate strategy on carbon markets via sustainability reporting

This project aims to map corporate strategies through the lens of sustainability disclosures, focusing on carbon markets and investments in Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) projects. Learners will review corporate disclosures from leading companies in sectors such as oil and gas, aviation, and technology to understand their strategic approaches to carbon markets. The project will involve identifying current assets in jurisdictions with compliance markets to evaluate their exposure to mandatory carbon pricing. The ultimate goal is to develop a comprehensive database that serves as a reference for understanding the carbon market-related strategies of these companies. This project provides an opportunity for learners to apply their classroom knowledge of sustainability, corporate strategy, and data analysis to real-world corporate disclosures.

Enhancing CO2 Storage Confidence

Enhancing understanding of measurement, monitoring and verification (MMV) techniques for geologic carbon dioxide storage drives this project. As the world races to reduce climate change, capture and storage of CO2 emerges as a key strategy. Questions persist about the safety of carbon storage. MMV ensures the safety, effectiveness, and credibility of geologic carbon sequestration projects while advancing technology and its acceptance as a climate change mitigation strategy. The project involves researching one of the main CCS storage monitoring techniques, seismic. The goal is to understand seismic survey methods, costs, and alternatives to track CO2 movement underground. Compare traditional 2D and 3D seismic survey methods with emerging alternatives Analyze cost structure of the different seismic survey techniques Evaluate the effectiveness and applicability of alternative methods Note environmental impacts of different survey methods By focusing on these aspects, the project aims to contribute valuable insights to the field of geologic carbon sequestration and its role in mitigating climate change. Students will apply their research skills and any subsurface or environmental knowledge.

Data Collection and Analysis of Carbon Pricing Systems

This project has two parts, both aim to analyse carbon pricing systems across the world. First part; Collect data and make a dataset on compliance carbon pricing regimes, specifically about the industrial sectors each system covers. The project will also examine whether and how these systems explicitly recognize low-carbon activities such as Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), biomass, or green hydrogen.  Second part; Mapping corporate strategy on carbon markets via sustainability reporting. This project aims to map corporate strategies through the lens of sustainability disclosures, focusing on carbon markets and investments in Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) projects

Comparative Analysis of Carbon Removal Solutions

The project aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the differences between nature-based and technology-based carbon removal solutions (CDR). As climate change becomes an increasingly pressing issue, companies like Wood Mackenzie are exploring various methods to mitigate carbon emissions. Nature-based solutions typically involve leveraging natural processes, such as reforestation and soil carbon sequestration, to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In contrast, technology-based solutions include advanced methods like direct air capture and carbon mineralization. The goal of this project is to categorize and analyze these solutions, highlighting their effectiveness, scalability, and potential environmental impacts. By doing so, learners will apply their classroom knowledge of environmental science and sustainability to real-world challenges, gaining insights into the practical applications and limitations of different CDR strategies.

Americas Electrical Sector Data Analysis

The project aims to analyze and compile data on electricity generation and emissions within the Americas region. The primary goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of the electrical sector, focusing on the types of energy sources used and their associated emissions. This project will enable learners to apply their knowledge of data collection, analysis, and interpretation to real-world scenarios. By examining various data sources, students will gain insights into the environmental impact of different energy generation methods. The project will involve tasks such as data gathering, cleaning, and visualization, ensuring that the information is accurate and easily understandable. This project is designed for students in environmental science or energy-related programs, allowing them to apply their classroom knowledge to a practical industry problem.

Cement Plant Emissions Data Enhancement

The project aims to enhance the dataset of global cement plant emissions by gathering updated and detailed information on 300 cement plants worldwide. Cement production is a significant source of CO2 emissions, and understanding the emissions profile of these plants is crucial for developing strategies to mitigate their environmental impact. By scraping data from cement companies' and associations' websites, the project seeks to obtain key information such as the start year of operation, the exact process type, original and current production capacities, and the number of kilns per plant. This data will provide a comprehensive overview of the emissions potential of each plant, aiding in the analysis of future emissions trends and the development of targeted reduction strategies.
