May 2021 Data Analysis & Reporting for Positive Social Change

This is a repost to admit a single applicant that has already interviewed. Please do not apply if you are not that applicant. With the COVID-19 pandemic, funding has been tight and we are spread too thin to get the data cleaning, screening, and analysis (as well as report writing if interested?) done for multiple research projects that are currently pending analysis of data. We’d like students to assist Dr. Edwards in helping clean up and analyze our datasets to draw helpful insights and make graphics, reports, and other media that will allow us to share our findings. From this analysis, we hope to share insights from our data that can help inspire and promote positive social change. The data sets in-hand currently include items relating to the COVID-19 pandemic impact on mental health and wellbeing, teachers, workers, and more (sorry, no biological data!). Students need to have access to either SPSS or MaxQDA, or will need to be able to purchase a student subscription (approx $50 USD for 6-months access) to either upon starting the internship. Each student will be assigned to assist Dr. Edwards on a single dataset/project. Students will collaborate with Dr. Edwards primarily via Slack, text, and video calls (Jit.si, Google Meet, and/or Zoom may be used - we will provide the link). Students need to be self-motivated and are required to practice professional behaviors and soft skills such as communication, time management, and teamwork in the following ways: 1) to touch base 1-2 times per week via Slack with Dr. Edwards to provide status updates on work, if stuck, on what. Providing screenshots is very helpful. 2) if stuck or needing clarification, to be willing to notify Dr. Edwards as soon as possible. If a live call is needed, student will work with her assistant to schedule a live call to resolve in a timely manner.

May '21 Build first MVP of Growth Hacking Training & Project Management Platform

Positions available: 1 student Our organization is able to offer a virtual internship opportunity for up to one student interested in working on growth hacking from a product development perspective of designing and developing products using iterative, MVP-oriented, user needs, feedback-loop oriented methods in a real-world startup environment, including experience working in an entreprenural startup, be part of launching a new product, or supporting startups, and learning to use the "growth hacking" mindset on marketing and developing and selling products and services. For more details about all that "Growth Hacking" entails, please refer to Wikipedia : Growth Hacking is a relatively new field in marketing focused on growth, coined by Sean Ellis in 2010, after using it to ignite breakout growth for Dropbox, LogMeIn, Eventbrite & Lookout. It started in relation to early-stage startups who need massive growth within a short time on tight budgets, and also reached bigger corporate companies. The goal is to rapidly test ideas that can improve the customer journey, and replicate and scale the ideas that work and modify or abandon the ones that don't before investing a lot of resources. A growth hacking team is made up of marketers, developers, engineers and product managers that specifically focus on building and engaging the user base of a business. Growth hacking is not just a tool for marketers. It can be applied to new product innovation and to the continuous improvement of products as well as to growing an existing customer base. As such, it’s equally useful to everyone from product developers, to engineers, to designers, to salespeople, The company founder is in the process of publishing an academic paper on a proprietary growth hacking aligned methodology, and has also identified that growth hacking is a missing component in many student's academic learning. In developing quality internship opportunities, Dr. Edwards has also identified that developing software aligned with these needs could help expand the use of her proprietary method while also creating a software-assisted mechanism to help companies better work with interns by providing a framework for the internship/learning experience. The intern or team will work with Dr. Edwards to build and launch the first minimum viable product (MVP) and learn to "think lean" when it comes to rapid prototyping and product launching. Time allowing, will also practice gathering and integrating user feedback in design process development. Student(s) should leave the internship at minimum with a live MVP product completed that can be added to their portfolio. A team could include students with complementary back-end development versus front-end design/UX and marketing skills, whereas a single individual would need to straddle these two roles with guidance from Dr. Edwards The individual will receive mentorship and instruction on all tasks to be accomplished via asynchronous and live virtual training from Dr. Edwards, who has 20+ years experience in entrepreneurship and small businesses and has managed marketing, growth, product planning, and sales growth of products in multiple product categories with a focus in technology-oriented startups & small businesses. Improve Data Collection, Analysis, Reporting & Toward "1 Million Served" Goal

Positions available: 1 individual student NOTICE: We are no longer accepting applications for the spring semester. You are welcome to apply if you wish to work in the summer/fall. With the COVID-19 pandemic, funding has been tight and we are spread too thin to stay on top of tracking our existing projects and materials towards a key performance indicator (1 Million Served) that our founder, Dr. Edwards has set. This relates to seeking to educate, inspire, and assist 1 Million or more people. This data is currently very manual to collect as it needs to be sourced from multiple systems and platforms and there is currently no programatical way to integrate this cleanly into a dashboard. A multi-tabular google sheet is currently used for this. This is a good project for a student interested in data science roles where many request some level of coding ability relating to accessing and/or integrating data sets. We’d like the student to assist Dr. Edwards in : 1) updating the sheet initially as a starting point for understanding the different sources of data 2) seeking to identify ways to better automate updating the sheet (scripts? Zapier? use of something other than google sheet for the dashboard + other data analysis methods?) and work on automation in those areas 3) building a better dashboard and method for evaluating the data that will also assist in understanding related financial metrics where applicable to assist in business strategic thinking and decision making related to having more real-time updated data on these metrics. 3) students are required to document their work effort on any day worked so that a future team member or collaborator could easily pick up where the student left off and continue the work effort. Shared documents and folders (primarily using Google Drive) will be provided to support this need. This is a critical component to working within a larger team for sustainable forward momentum with projects where different team members may be assigned or re-assigned on a regular basis, and is particularly essential as a skill for virtual workers to take to heart and practice.

IP, Copyright, Trademark, Patent Protection help for Startup Product Development

Positions available: One individual student NOTICE: We are no longer accepting applications for the spring semester. You are welcome to apply if you wish to work in the summer/fall. Our organization is interested in moving forward with marketing and putting live, and/or seeking investment in the products that we have been working on developing. As an in-house R&D/incubator, we don't have a big marketing team of legal advisors to help us make sure we are publishing/documenting/protecting our IP correctly for each of our early-stage products/projects. As part of our initial assessment and strategy development, we would like assistance in evaluating the potential legal protections available, strategic advise, and related costs, as well as any liability concerns you identify that we may need to strategically plan to address and budget for as we grow. We hope to work with one or more students on this so that students can not only research and advise, but actively help us document/protect our IP and be able to demonstrate that skill to future employers as a real example. We are especially interested in: Regulatory barriers and required approvals. Structure implications. Licenses and patent rights eligibility. Contractual issues. Actually assisting us in filing for trademarks/patents/etc.

MyCheerleader: iPhone App Development for Positive Encouragement

Positions available: One student, or one already established team of up to four students with a team lead who would be my primary contact. This team must already have good working relationships amongst each other and complementary skills (ie - UI/UX/Design vs Swift, vs web development, etc.) NOTICE: We are no longer accepting applications for the spring semester. You are welcome to apply if you wish to work in the summer/fall. We've developed a prototype of a mental health support app as a web application with Alexa Skills and SMS integration, (www.mycheerleader.net) but need to move into being an iPhone application so that we can grow. The feedback from users we've received so far is that they would be more likely to use it if it was an iPhone application rather than an Alexa skill or website. This is a rapid prototyping / get stuff live / practice lean startup, agile, and MVP development and testing project. You won't spend all your time ideating - we've already done that. Your goal is to help us get real live MVP work done, where other people can see it, give us feedback to help us improve, and be able to use the live, working product(s) to show future employers that you've got the skills, not just the education when you graduate and are trying to get hired. Based on your skill set, we'll work together on what reasonable next steps in MVP development and testing should look like. We'll be using Jira, Slack, and Jit.si for communicating asynchronously and live. Students should be prepared to: Create and launch at least 1 initial MVP of the iphone app in the store Create detailed documentation on work performed and the structure that would enable an easy-hand-off to a future intern or other team members in the future Edit existing MyCheerleader.net site as needed to link to the iPhone app once launched.
